Island food is always bursting with flavor and color. From empanadas, coconut ice cream, donuts, and a variety of fresh fruit.

Empanada

Puerto Rican food is known for it's strong flavors, fried foods, and freshness. Puerto Ricans love their food, and they always pour their hearts into it. I think that is one reason why it is so unique from anywhere else. While in Puerto Rico I was able to try a variety of Puerto Rican dishes. One of my favorites were the empanadas, pictured above, which are crusts filled with either meat, cheese, or vegetables. The fruity drinks were also delicious, my favorite being the mango strawberry drink.

Coconut ice cream is one of the most delicious items in the world. It's smooth, flavor filled, and oh so tasty! Fresh coconut ice cream from a little kiosk on the streets on San Juan was amazing on a 90 degree day. In the streets there are many kiosks, as well as on the beach. You can find pretty much any food you want, and it is normally quite inexpensive. Donuts and breads are also quite popular. While on my way to a jungle hike I stopped at a small bakery nestled into the mountain side. There I experienced the best donuts and bread pudding. Sometimes the best things are found in the most remote places.
